Water of Life and Angels Share | Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival !!

This is definitely not a food story but a journey to discover the passion behind the world’s finest whiskies. With nearly 200 years of whisky history Scotland is the worlds biggest selling malts in the world with a long history of innovation.

Spirit of Speyside

The ancient term uisge beatha, which is Gaelic for the Latin aqua vitae or ‘water of life’, was colloquies in the 18′” century to usky, and then to whisky. There is something hypnotic and poetic about this anecdote as each year a small amount of the “water of life” contained in the whiskey barrel evaporates and the master distillers call this disappearance “the Angel’s share.”

There are unfathomable distilleries, shops, pubs, special tastings, great food, ceilidhs and definitely rich traditional music. This is my journey but if you want to carve yours for the next year then do visit their website for all festival related information www.spiritofspeyside.com.

But before i visited my mecca i first did my crash course in whisky at the whisky museum in Edinburgh. It is actually a breathtaking experience which goes in a swirling and bubbling barrel ride through a prototype distillery and enriches you with whisky making process. There are actually expert tour guides who make your sip more informative by their nosing, swirling and tasting techniques. In a jiffy if i need to explain a layman whats is difference between these whiskies then these are my baby words:

  • Lowlands whisky : They are also referred to as “feminine drams” because they are fresh, light, fragrant, floral with cereal flavorings.
  • Highland whisky : This one is a lil difficult to define but it is mostly smooth and floral but its difficult to categorize accurately. This is solely my point of view.
  • Speyside whisky : This is fruity and delicate and the most famous as it houses the most number of world famous distilleries in this region. The world’s best-sellers: The Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Glen Grant and The Macallan reside here.
  • Islay whisky : This is pronounced as ‘eye-luh’ and is my personal favorite. The most powerful and thunderous produce of the rugged, windswept, barren islands which have a strong peaty or smoky aroma to them.ScotlandTrip 039 Scotland2014 045

The most difficult part of the journey was the balancing act of a mother’s passion.Yes I have a three-year old precious unicorn who accompanied me on this enchanting journey to Dufftown which is the whisky capital of Scotland. There is no straightforward way to this place but yes if there is a will there is a way.I didn’t Scotland2014 044 Scotland2014 043have a car to drive so it was a tenacious journey of changing modes of transport every now and then.

Thanks to god they run a dedicated transport network exclusively for the festival on Route 36 (whisky Trail) and Route 34 (Aveimore to Grantown on Spey). All the routes are marked with picturesque landscapes and abundance of farm animals like sheep, cow, horses and pigs.(Yes a good way to memorize old Mac Donalds had a farm ‘eiya eiya o’).Well i took the difficult route for maximum coverage from Aveimore->Grantown on Spey->Arbelour->Dufftown and back.

What all could you do apart from getting soaked 🙂 is as follows : Hopping on Keith & Dufftown railway, visit innumerable distilleries ,luxury tours, judge and taste whisky, whisky treasure hunt, carve a whisky tumbler, palette food with whisky essence and dance to the bagpipers.

Gordon & Macphail will have to wait for me this time!! 🙁

As a fond remembrance i have made a beautiful photographic journey which  comprises of some of the most breathtaking and awe-inspiring whisky trail images. If you are an ardent fan of this ‘Water of Life’ then do make it a point to embark on this journey.
