Festival of colours
The festival of colours is round the corner and there is still so much left to do.The HOLI Festival takes place on the day of the full moon of the Phaluga month and is one of the most famous celebrations in the northern parts of India. At this Hindu-Festival people celebrate the victory of the good over the bad and the beginning of the spring. The most important thing is, that on this day all castes of the indian caste-system are nullified and put out of force. On this day of celebration all people are supposed to be equal!
This festival has painted my soul from my very toddlerhood.Unfortunately I belong to a family which is phobic to colours. My sister gets fever when she sees colour powder being smeared. My mother thought that colour would spoil her skin.My dad for some unknown reason developed a gloom at the sight of colour clad faces.I am an out caste for that day.My mother made we wear old clothes and smear oil on my hair and skin. This was done to avoid any coloration of the skin (Hmmm….did I care).I was pushed out of the house early in the morning.I went away wheatish only to come back rainbow-ish.Then started the painful process of bathing thrice in order to remove the colour from my skin.I am a mother today but my spirits are still high and I still share the same passion for colours and festivity.
My mother definitely prepared lot of goodies to eat.People were invited for evening dinner to each other’s place. The essence of this festival is to foster equality and tolerance and bring people together.
A Glass of the Past
My dad’s famous seven friends used to meet at a common place to party, talk and enjoy a good meal on this day.Thankfully it was a family thing so the entire family would be a part of the party. The ladies huddled in the corner gossiping about discounted facials, domestic helper tantrums to the latest rom-com happenings.Children would be running around like hooligans adding to the noise and fun. While the men sat down with their signature scotch and chatting loudly about work and politics. We would cross our mums, round the dads and jump the steps only to do the whole thing again.I wonder from where do kids get all that energy.
On one such occasion are dads had just finished their drinks and moved to the dining for dinner.Kids usually are picky eaters. We had munched our way through the entire party. Our parents back then were such puritans who stuck to strict moral and social principles for bringing up a child. But as you know curiosity kills the cat.We always admired the glasses with ice and bubbly. We were such devils we decided to sneak into the room and steal a sip from the left over drinks on the table.I still remember the strong bitter perfumed stink linger on my tongue for ages. That very sip squashed my inquisitive spirits when it touched my palate. It sent me into an instant tizzy and I swore I would never memorise the names Bordeaux,Montrachet, cognac, lager and Negroni ever.
Well do I know these words today its for the reader to decide. But I will never forget my first sip of that glass of the past.Only to present you this childhood drink with a alcoholic twist.Jack Daniel’s Cream Float.
I as a parent am still confused how to pass this accidental wisdom to the next generation. What do you think ? Let me know in the comments below.
Jack Daniel’s is a brand of Tennessee whiskey and the highest selling American whiskey in the world. It is produced in Lynchburg, Tennessee, by the Jack Daniel Distillery. The mashbill is made up of 80% corn, 12% rye and 8% malt. The spirit is filtered through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal to produce a mellow, slightly smoky character, thus making it Tennessee whiskey.(Though classically a straight bourbon).
