Today’s recipe takes me to the days when glossy advertisements for alcohol were allowed on national television. Without glorifying the consumption of liquor I will stick to my memories. With no pre-conditioned notion of what Bacardi was, I just kept humming this reggae day in and day out. One day my mother got hold of me singing this in the bathroom. And that was it she went from being lady Ha Ha to Lady Ma Ma. I got the lecture of my life where my humming was dissected into 3/10 of my maths unit test, mess of the house and borderline teenage abstinence.
It took me exactly 30 years to understand why humming that very song was evaluated into a report card.
I leave you this beautiful reggae number to hum which was originally written as “sitting in the summer sun”. How I wish they had not altered the lyrics for the ten-year old back then. (Yup I was just ten 😉 )
Be, what you wanna be,taking things the way, they come,
nothing is as nice as finding paradise and
Sippin’ on Bacardi Rum.Living live the easy way,
got your way to let it run,
nothing is as cool as drifting in the sun light,
Sippin’ on Bacardi Rum.la la la Bacardi Rum,
la la la Bacardi Rum,
nothing is as cool as drifting in the sun light,

Coming back to today’s recipe, its spring time and mercury is rising and my house is a full house. I wanted to make a spring/summer drink from the less popular grapefruit. Pleasantly sharp with juicy flesh and zesty rind, grapefruits come in red, pink and white varieties. I prefer the red ones cause they are more sweeter.
- 1 red grapefruit
- 1 tsp castor sugar/sugar syrup (optional)
- 10 ml orange juice
- 1 pint soda
- 1 shot of Bacardi rum
- Ice cubes
- fresh mint leaves
- a citrus reamer
- Shake together soda water, few fresh mint leaves, sugar, white rum.
- Add freshly juiced red grapefruit juice and orange juice.
- Pour over ice in a tall glass, and garnish with a sprig of mint leaves, plus a thin slice of grapefruit.
