I love history… everything is inspired by history, so that’s why I love vintage and antiques.- Kelly Wearstler
I was always a prehistoric kid ever since my childhood. I remember picking up all sorts of shaped, coloured stones, broken earthen ware from the roads and riversides. I would collect them and tell my mum that they are relics from the Indus valley civilisations. You can imagine my mother’s reaction then. I had an old shoe box which became my treasure chest for these divine collectibles. I was aware of the tight-lipped gossip going around me in my house as they considered me a lunatic and fearing the worst I had labelled the box “DO NOT TOUCH” ! 🙂
Coming back to my growing years I always had a penchant for antiques and in museums the antique section would be my favourite. Not that I had google back then in school to read up all about antiques but it was more of a self instinctive thing which draws me towards them. When I started blogging one year back I had never realised how much food, photography and props were such an integral part of antiquing. The composition for a simple food photograph is enhanced with its visual artefacts. This doesn’t necessarily imply that a Meissen tea-cup is needed to shoot food but anything which has seasoned with age is considered vintage or antique in my opinion. I find myself walking backwards into time as I understand food art more and more. I am buying silver dessert spoons, pewter plates, decanters and bronze ware. John Rocca, Laopala and Biba seem subliminal. Why does my hubby have the same facial expression that my mom had twenty-five years back, as I am pouring wine into a carafe ????
Gastronomie Nostalgie – Gourmet Antique shop
In my recent visit to Amsterdam I chanced upon Gastronomie Nostalgie a quaint shop located on the very vibrant Nieuwezijds Voorburgwals about ten minutes from Dam square. In the food blogging world I have many friends who would be equally excited by this find and I feel its a moral responsibility to spread the word. 🙂
A huge array of gourmet food object from yesteryear, such as bread baskets, carafe, sauce bowls, napkin rings, Gastronomy Nostalgia sconces, wine coolers, glassware and dinnerware.
Prestigious Art Manufactures
You will find a host of renowned Dutch names like Gero, Sola, Keltum, Regout Mosa as well as prestigious international houses such as Christofle, WMF, Wiskemann, Mappin & Webb, Val St. Lambert, Meissen etc etc.
It doesn’t take money to have style, it just takes a really good eye. Prices run from 5 euros for one silver dessert spoon to 25 euros for a cake server and 800 euros for a Wiskemann silver platter. Mr.Duijves the owner is very welcoming and knowledgeable. He also gave me a great deal which made me squeal like a kid. Just be patient as you browse through the collectibles you will surely find something to suit your taste and wallet.Always take a second opinion before you buy antiques. My hubby had transformed into a learned art connoisseur for just that moment. 🙂
This place transports you to the era of medieval cuisine, exquisite cutlery and elegant manners. You will find some serious food cutlery connoisseurs, small timers like me and curious tourists for mere peep in.Everything you need under one roof for a arts de la table.
