In Britain, when it comes to olive oil I remain loyal to Napolina. But when I got my hands on the Tanerramare – Extra Virgin Olive Oil from italy I must admit I loved it every bit. It comes from the southern coastal village of Italy, Salento. It vicinity to the mediterranean and the years of handwork put by the family into producing high quality oil is significant as you taste the product.
There are few facts about Extra Virgin Olive oil which is not known to most of the urban consumers.
- The extra virgin olive oil is the freshly pressed olive juice from olives which have been harvested with 24 hours. The olive juice once extracted is subjected to mechanical treatment and are not subjected to any heat or chemical treatment.
- The extra virgin olive oil is supposed to be rich in antioxidants because it is extracted from aged olive trees.
- A cheap olive oil available at the supermarket shelf may not be the best quality oil.
- The country of production and processing should be marked on the label.
- A dark bottle is preferred over light bottle because it prevents oxidation from the sun.
A good extra virgin olive oil has a fruity note as the first taste while a peppery aftertaste owing to its freshness. The reason it’s bitter is due to the presence of polyphenols, natural antioxidants that are very good for our well-being. The newer is the oil, the stronger the bitter taste, which tends to disappear with time.
